Winter is in full swing in the Alberni Valley, and while most of us are bundling up to stay warm, there are women, children, and youth in our community who face the harsh reality of unsafe homes and limited support every single day.
For 10 years, Sage Haven Society has partnered with the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) to make a real difference. This annual winter walk is more than a fundraising event. It’s a community coming together to provide safety, stability, and care for those who need it most.

Why This Walk Matters
Gender-based and intimate partner violence isn’t an isolated problem. It’s a widespread, systemic
issue that affects women, children, families, and entire communities. By talking about it and
showing up together, we break the silence, challenge stigma, and help survivors know they are
believed, supported, and not alone.
The funds raised through CNOY directly support Sage Haven’s essential programs that give
women and children not just safety, but the space to heal, grow, and thrive. Programs such as:
- Stopping the Violence Program, offering trauma-informed counselling and support to women
as they navigate healing and recovery - P.E.A.C.E. Program, supportive counselling and group education for children and youth, ages
3 through 18 years, who have been exposed to family violence and other relationship violence. - Port Alberni Transition House, confidential, safe and supportive housing for women and
children who have experienced intimate partner violence or are at risk of violence. - Second Stage Housing, offering 6–18-month accommodation in a supportive environment for
women and their children who are fleeing domestic violence and supports to help them transition
to independent permanent housing. - Community-Based Victim Support Services supporting safety planning, advocacy, and
guidance through complex systems - Sexual Assault Response Program, serving the community of Port Alberni by supporting
survivors of sexual assault on a volunteer-based initiative. - Adult & Youth Outreach Services, offering emotional and crisis support without judgment as
well as increasing safety by connecting and referring youth to local resources with a focus on
risk reduction.
Gender-based violence doesn’t wait, and neither can we. Support from the community ensures
women and children have access to the programs and resources they need to escape violence and
reclaim their lives.
Celebrating 10 Years of Community Impact
This year is special. We’re marking a decade of community members showing up, supporting
one another, and helping Sage Haven continue its vital work. It’s a milestone that reminds us
how much can happen when a community comes together for a cause that matters.
The walk takes place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Port Alberni. Join us, and be part of
something meaningful that will make a tangible difference in the lives of people in our
community.
